CWDM stands for Coarse Wavelength Divison Multiplexing.
With this technology you can send up from 4 to 16 different "colors" over a fiber-optical-cable. The edge of CWDM to normal fiber-optical-cable is, that you have a much higher speed and so you can send mutch more data over one cable than with a normal optical-technology. An other difference is the range, the CWDM has a range of over 50km.
CWDM operating mode
At first, you need pro colour a GBIC, a SFP, a XFP or a XENPAK. Then you will connect your optical transceiver with a MUX. This device bunch your signal an send it over one fiberoptic cable to a DEMUX. This device will split the signal in the original state and send it to the optical transceiver back
The difference to DWDM
- cheaper, because the laser are not cooled.
- greater distance between the "colour"
- lower numbers of colours (only 4 til 16, DWDM have up to 80 and theoretically any more colors)
- shorter range
