CWDM stands for Coarse Wavelength Divison Multiplexing.

With this technology you can send up from 4 to 16 different "colors" over a fiber-optical-cable. The edge of CWDM to normal fiber-optical-cable is, that you have a mutch higher speed and so you can send mutch more data over one cable than with a normal optical-technology. An other difference is the range, the CWDM have a range of over 50km.

The difference to DWDM is:

  • cheaper, because the laser are not cooled.
  • greater distance between the fiber
  • shorter range

Following GBICs and SFPs are compatible with CWDM
